frequently asked questions
How do I apply for South West Music School?
You are eligible to apply if you are between the ages of 8 and 16 on 1st September in the year you are applying. Applications are open from January to May (exact dates may vary each year). You can apply by downloading the application form from the website (when applications are open). The how to apply page will give you more information.
What do I need to send with the application form?
Along with the completed application form you need to send a passport photo, a musical reference (written by someone who knows you musically) and a recording of 2 contrasting pieces on your first instrument (or 1 piece on each of your first and second instruments if appropriate). These need to be the instruments you intend to audition on. The recording does not need to be high quality, we will accept anything from tape to CD, DVD or an emailed MP3 (or any other form that you have access to - we do not judge the quality of the recording).
What grade do I need to be to apply?
We do not look for specific grades; instead we look for musical talent and potential. Some of our students have grade 8 in multiple instruments, others are completely self taught but what they have in common is a passion for music and a real musicianship that cannot be taught. Even once students are accepted, we do not insist that they take grades on their instrument. Every student’s programme is individually tailored to suit their needs and is intended to help develop them as an individual.
What instruments do you accept onto the Programme? Does it include singers?
We accept ALL instruments and ALL genres of music. We have had baroque recorder specialists working alongside heavy metal drummers and singer/songwriters working with classical violinists (to name but a few!) It is your musicianship and passion for music that we are looking for.
What’s the time commitment?
If you are successful at audition, the first year will be as part of the Feeder Scheme which is 6 workshops spread across the year that happen at weekends or in the school holidays. The Core Programme, though more involved, is designed to fit around your current lifestyle. Individual tutoring and mentoring sessions are intended to fit with your other commitments and are arranged between you and the tutor/mentor. Residentials are compulsory but only three times a year over a long weekend in the school holidays. Other activities are optional and can be attended on agreement between you and the SWMS office.
What funding is available?
If you are successful in gaining a place with South West Music School we have means tested grants available for both the Feeder Scheme and Core Programme which can be applied for on acceptance of your place.
