what to expect from the audition day

Main Audition

This is the opportunity to perform to an audition panel.  It lasts for 15 minutes and we ask for 2 contrasting pieces on a first instrument (or 1 piece on each of the first and second instruments if appropriate).  Applicants should audition on the instrument they are most confident and comfortable on.  (This is usually the one the applicant is of the highest standard.) For those that require an accompanist, we will provide one, with rehearsal time, on the day.

Discussion Session

This is a 15 minute one-to-one discussion with an SWMS mentor.  They will discuss with the applicant about their music and music in general.  It is an opportunity for applicants to talk openly about their passion for music and their hopes for getting into South West Music School.

Group Session

The group session is run by an SWMS tutor and is an opportunity to work with the other SWMS applicants in musical games and activities.  There are two group sessions per audition day and applicants will be assigned to either the morning or afternoon session.

Audition Days are expected to last the majority of the day.
