Mentoring & Individual Tuition

Each student will be assigned a professional composer as a mentor/tutor who will work with them on their compositional and musical development.  Each mentor/tutor will work with the student to create an individual learning plan (ILP) with clear goals and objectives for the year. 

Residential Learning

There will be three residential learning experiences during the academic year:

26 - 28 October 2011:  This will be a 3 day intensive course. Students will explore a number of compositional styles and through listening and musical experimentation start to create their own original pieces with professional resident tutors.  We will also offer places to SWMS advanced instrumental students to work with the composers on their compositions and record and perform them at the end of the residential.

31 March - 2 April 2012: This will be another 3 day intensive course. Students will bring compositional ideas that they have been developing with their mentor/tutor since the October residential to develop with the professional resident tutors and SWMS advanced instrumentalists.

5th - 11th August 2012: This will be in partnership with Sound and Music Summer School.  Application forms will be available and participants will apply and can use their newly composed pieces as their application submission.

This programme is an innovative project for talented young composers and musicians aged 14-18 from around the UK. Working in partnership with the Purcell School of Music in Bushey, it allows young people to develop their compositional talents and skills through an intensive residential week, mentored by professional composers and musicians.

The composition stream of South West Music School is run in partnership with Sound and Music and is supported by the PRS for Music Foundation.
