Recorder Masterclass December 2009
On Wednesday 2nd December 2009, I was lucky enough to go to London in order to have a masterclass with renowned Australian recorder virtuoso, Genevieve Lacey. London itself was very impressive. It was my first time in London so it was great to see all the famous landmarks, including the London Eye and Buckingham Palace, as well as travelling around in a taxi (yet another revelation!).
The masterclass itself was invaluable. Genevieve was encouraging and helpful, and discussed with me some of the more subtle aspects of playing, some of which I had never considered. Her advice covered the use of colour in performance, playing difficult sections, practise strategies, advanced techniques and creating variety in a piece of music. All of these tips were very useful to me, and will help me greatly in the future when I explore music more deeply.
The most important thing I learnt is that music is more than just notes on a page. It tells a story, and often it is like a song without words where you are free to change the words and meaning of the music how you wish. It is important also for the music to mean something to you. If you really feel and understand the music when you play it, then an audience will also.
