Percussion Residential April 2010
A Banging Residential
'From the 8th - 9th of April the percussionists at South West music School had an intensive two days of percussion with Joby Burgess, renowned percussionist from EnsembleBash, New Noise and Powerplant.
We did many different sessions including traditional African hand druming, minimilist marimba pieces and ensemble work. Sometimes we had to sight read conventional music notation which was good for my sight reading skills; we also looked at pieces using different forms of notation.Working with Joby was very inspiring. I really enjoyed the range of musical styles that he brought to the sessions. He is a great teacher and I learn`t so much in the space of just two days. We also had time to talk about important percussionists and different artists that we all aspire to be like! It was also great to have the chance to work with a small group of people who are all interested in similar things. Thank you to South West Music School for organising this and I hope that I can be part of something like this again.' - Molly Lopresti-Richards
'I learnt so much about performance. Joby’s mentoring was really good and has given me lots of ideas for the future. He was also awesome on drums.’ - Luke Hinchliffe
'I enjoyed the weekend especially as it gave me a good chance to do more tuned percussion. My sight reading was put to the test and I learnt a lot about world music drumming.' - Floyer Sydenham
