Simon Preston
Currently running Southmead Sound School in Bristol, he is also Musical Director of Samba Galez, a 40 piece drumming group, plays in several bands ranging (from Cuban Rumba to Eastern European folk and jazz) and composes for theatre and film. He also leads huge drum orchestras directing up to 300 players for special events such as the Rugby World Cup closing ceremony or performances with the Welsh College of Music's big band. With 20 years experience of directing and teaching drum groups and thirty years working as a player and composer, Simon has a wealth of ideas and experience to bring to the session. He has also studied and lived in Tanzania, Ghana, Cuba, Brazil and USA focussing on marimbas, congas, thumb pianos and kit. The work will be deeply rooted in afro traditions, multi-layered with a contemporary feel and employing a range of instruments that reflect those influences.
