John Harries
John Harries was born in the small town of Rhydamman in South West Wales, close to the Black Mountains.
He left Amman Valley Grammar School to study music in Cardiff, where he gained the usual degrees and diplomas. He then undertook a PGCE at London University, whilst also building up contacts as a freelance viola player, performing with most of the London based and regional orchestras.
His career has always been a mixture of performing and teaching. A great influence on his life was studying with Gordon Mutter (Cardiff) and Max Gilbert (Royal Academy). Sheila Nelson also shaped his education philosophy during his time working with her on the Tower Hamlets project involving large group string teaching.
John has been an instrumental teacher, class teacher, head of department, head of music centre, advisory teacher, adviser and freelance performer in London before coming to Cornwall as head of Performing Arts.
His thesis on the effect and impact of GCSE music as part of his masters degree in arts management and education was published in 1987 by London City University. His education philosophy has four main thrusts; If there is only one music, there is only one music education, the joy of making music through the instrument, partnership power and, more recently, parallels in music performance and sport.
He is currently Head of Cornwall Music Service and County Adviser, Chair of Cornwall Youth Music Action Zone, and trustee of three institutions who generate funds for young disadvantaged musicians. He is also a member of the judging panel for the International Male Voice Choir Festival. When time allows him, he enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, playing golf and taking an interest in all sports in general!
