Graham Lynch
Graham Lynch was born in London. As a teenager he studied classical piano but also played keyboards in rock and jazz rock bands. It was his interest in composition that led him to study music at university, where he gained a PhD in composition from King’s College London. He also spent a year at the Royal College of Music, as well as studying privately with Oliver Knussen for two years.
Graham’s music has been performed in over thirty countries, as well as being frequently recorded to CD and broadcast on radio and television. Although many of his performances are outside the UK he has also worked with leading orchestras and ensembles in this country; these include the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Singers, Orchestra of Opera North, Belcea Quartet, and El Ultimo Tango from the CBSO.
In 2009 his orchestral work Invisible Cities was used as the modern test piece in the Leeds Conductors Competition, and the same year saw the release of the first CD devoted to his music, Undiscovered Islands, which received hugely positive reviews and was featured on Radio 3..
Graham’s interest in many musical styles has meant that his pieces reach from complex classical works through to compositions that are in a modern tango nuevo style and that also draw on influences from flamenco and fado. His tangos are in the repertoire of ensembles in both Europe and the Americas. In 2008 the BBC Concert Orchestra commissioned an arrangement of his tango Milonga Azure to be the representative work by a living tango composer in their ‘History of Tango’ programme for the Radio 3 Discovering Music series.
Okay…if you’ve read this far you’ve got all the official blurb! But the most important thing is that Graham loves sharing his interest and passion for music of all styles, and enjoys working with and meeting students from many different musical backgrounds.
